From 16 August: STORM BOY, a beautiful retelling of the classic Australian story starring Jai Courtney, Finn Little, Geoffrey Rush


Storm Boy has grown up to be Michael Kingley, a successful retired businessman and grandfather.  When Kingley starts to see images from his past that he can’t explain, he’s forced to remember his childhood growing up on an isolated coastline with his father.  He recounts to his granddaughter how, as a boy, he rescued and raised an extraordinary orphaned pelican, Mr Percival.  Their remarkable adventures and very special bond has a profound effect on all their lives. Rated PG


From 23 August:  HOTEL MUMBAI , a true life drama/thriller starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Tilda Cobham-Hervey


26 November 2008: a wave of devastating terrorist attacks through Mumbai catapulted the city into chaos.  The primary target of this attack was the renowned Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.


Based on true accounts of this terrifying assault, Hotel Mumbai brings together the guests and staff of the luxurious hotel, including new parents David and Zahra, a Russian businessman Vasili and newly promoted waiter Arjun, in a desperate fight for survival.  Rated MA15+

From 30 August:  THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gael Garcia Bernal


Stuck in an unsatisfying marriage and with teenage children who ignore her, 40-year-old Lisa Spinelli treads water by teaching kindergarten with quiet dispassion.  Everything changes when Lisa discovers that Jimmy, a five-year-old boy in her class, may be a gifted poet and sees him as a ticket out of her mundane life.  When Lisa presents some of Jimmy’s work at her poetry class as her own and receives praise from her teacher, her desire to mentor the child genius grows.  As fascination turns to obsession, Lisa spirals downward on a dangerous and desperate path to channel her unfulfilled creative dreams into the protégé.  Rated M

From 2 August : SEARCHING, a thriller starring John Cho, Debra Messing


After David Chim’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case.  But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search in one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today, his daughter’s laptop. In a modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.  Rated M


From 9 August : GLORIA BELL, a sophisticated romantic comedy starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro

From 7 June : ADRIFT, a drama based on an incredible true story, starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin

In September 1983 Tami Oldham Ashcraft and her fiancé Richard Sharp were hired to take a 44-foot yacht on the 4,000 mile journey from Tahiti to San Diego.  They could not anticipate that, about half way through their Pacific journey, they would run into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in history, forcing them to struggle to control the yacht in 145-knot winds.  In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins.  With no hope of rescue the injured Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.  Rated M  1hr 55mins
