What's on at the Theatre?

From 14 December : Book Club – a comedy/romance starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen

The mundane lives of four long-time friends are turned upside down to hilarious ends when their book club attempts to shake things up by tackling the infamous bestseller “Fifty Shades of Grey”.  From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, they inspire each other to make the next chapter of their lives the best and steamiest thus far.  Rated M

From 21 December : The Book Shop – starring Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy, Patricia Clarkson

In 1959, in the small town of Hardborough, England, Florence Green, a free-spirited widow, puts grief behind her and risks everything to open up a bookshop – the first in the sleepy seaside town. By exposing the narrow-minded local townsfolk to the best literature of the day, she opens their eyes thereby causing a cultural awakening in a town which has not changed for centuries.  Her activities bring her a kindred spirit and ally in the figure of Mr Brundish but she also invites the hostility of the town’s less prosperous shopkeepers, including Mrs. Gamart, Hardborough’s vengeful, embittered alpha female, herself a wannabe doyenne of the local arts scene.  When Florence refuses to bend to Gamart’s will, they begin a struggle not just for the bookshop but for the very heart and soul of the town.  Rated PG
