The results for the last round of the Men’s comp saw Umi’s team defeat Guss’s team and Arki’s team defeat Sam’s team.  Next Monday sees the finals being played with Arki’s team against Umi’s team.  This is followed by a BBQ afterwards so hope to see everyone there to support the finals.

Tempest Tuesday as it will now be known, due to the many windy evenings we have endured, saw our ladies play Rd 5.  There were some great rallies and lots of fun had by all.  A special mention must go to Jaimi Lee who did some smoking forehands and also some pretty special moves!  She always causes a stir, whatever court she is on! Of course, Tuesday night also provides the ladies with a social opportunity which they love almost as much as the tennis.  We will look forward to round 6 next week.  Points this week were:  Bri 18, Gill 16, Vanessa 14, Kerri 13, Toppy 12, Jodi 12, Kim 12, Tara 11, Sarah 11, Jo 6, Jaimi 5, Louise 4.

Mavis Cup round six happened last Saturday and it was great to see some new faces.  Due to football we didn’t have as social night as normal, but there were some great games of tennis.  Russell proved he was a very handy player giving Kim a great game and Liz and Louise playing some great rallies on the court.  Carly and Phil also had some great games and got into the swing of it as the afternoon progressed.   Next week will see round seven taking place and we should have everyone back on board, which will be good.  Remember to bring meat and salad to share if you are staying on afterwards.

The 4th round of the Mens comp continued on Monday.    Next week will see Round 5 taking place.  If you are unable to make it, please organise your own sub from the list that was provided.

This week we saw our ladies play Round3 and there were some great games from all accounts.  Thanks to Jaimi for sending through the scores!! We did have a few ladies down and couldn’t get a couple of reserves, so unfortunately some people didn’t score for this week. Tara 18, Ness 16, Carly 11, Kim 11 ,Jo 8, Kerri 8, Jaimi 6, Sarah 5.  Well done to Tara on earning maximum points.

Last week our Tuesday Ladies comp played Round two in some ferocious winds.  People would be excused from thinking we were at the snow with players playing in beanies and hoodies.  There was some great tennis and good to see some of our new reserves taking to the court.  Nice to see Tanya Delaney picking up some great shots.  We also had Julie filling in for us and it was good to see that her trip has not impacted on her tennis.  Points were:  Gill 18, Toppy 18, Teresa 17, Carly 14, Toppy 13, Tara 13, Tanya 13, Julie 11, Kerri 11, Kim 10, Jaimi 10, Sandi 9, Jodie 9, Sarah 7.  Starting to spread the ladies out.  Great to see some of our new tennis players playing some awesome cross court shots and big improvement in their general tennis games.  A great start ladies!  Remember to call your own reserves if you are unable to play.  A great night was had by all!!

Mavis Cup round six will take place this afternoon at the Cheryl Tennis club from 4.30pm.  We are welcoming some new players to the mix which should make play more interesting.  Remember to bring meat and salad to share if you are staying on afterwards.

Thanks to everyone for helping behind the scenes and supporting the tennis club at the Comedy Festival last weekend.  It was certainly a fun night and a great night for Norfolk.

The Mens comp kicked off on Wednesday with wins going to, Tony’s team over Sam’s, 36 to 14, and a narrow win to Arki’s team over Umi’s team 24 to 23.  Next week Sam’s team takes on Umi’s and Tony’s team takes on Arki’s.  If you are unable to make it, please organise your own sub from the list that was provided.

Tuesday saw the ladies have their first round with their new partners.  As we had a few ladies still sick/injured we will officially begin the comp this Tuesday.  It was great to welcome back some past members to the comp and I know that they enjoyed their tennis.  There were some great rallies!!   It is important that if you are unable to play from now on, that you organise your own sub as this will now be a competition.

Thursday night is the perfect night for a hit of tennis and all locals and visitors are welcome to come along.  Soccer also happens on the courts from 6pm.

Welcome back to Sam Cribb and Hannah Wright who represented Norfolk at the POJC in Fiji.  Hannah finished 7th and Sam finished 10th so that was awesome showing that we have two players in the top ten.  They both were undefeated in the team event where East versed West and they helped the East take the win.  Thank you to Emma for your organisation and support with this trip.  Well done to all involved.  A more detailed report will follow next week.

Please note that the Cheryl Tennis Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 22nd August, at 5.15pm and will take place at the club house.  All interested parties are more than welcome to attend.

The club’s annual presentation night is looking like it will be held in early September, we will keep you posted, when it is confirmed.  Just a reminder that if you still have outstanding trophies to be returned can this happen asap so they can be cleaned and engraved.

Court Hire:  Visitors and non-members are welcome to play during the day at a cost of $16 per hour- Night rates are $18 per hour. Tuesday night ladies saw reduced numbers this week and we are hopeful that next week will see everyone back on board.  Remember you do need to organise your own sub if you can’t make it!

Wednesday night Norfolk Island Professional Services Comp had another good night with wins going to Alistair’s team over Sam’s team, Kev’s team over Tony’s team and Jimmy’s team over Howard’s team. A very balmy night for tennis.

We have two of our Juniors heading off to the Country Champs in Foster in just under three weeks and that is Sam and Hannah who have been asked to accompany Laurie Geist and his team which is a privilege and we wish them all the best for this.

A big WELCOME to all who are here this week for the 29th Annual Veterans' Tennis Tournament proudly sponsored by Governor's Lodge Resort and also generously supported by local businesses and the community. Players from Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and NSW will arrive over the weekend to join local players in contesting Ladies, Mens and Mixed Doubles events for 40's,50's,60's and 70's Age Divisions.  We could possibly accommodate a few late entries if any tennis player  is already on island  -especially ladies for the Mixed Dbls- please come up early on Sunday afternoon  and check out the options!

Huge thanks to all the Committee and club members, including many juniors, who have put in hours at working bees and in their own time to ensure that Clubhouse, courts  and surrounds are looking wonderful. And in anticipation, special thanks to those  who'll bring in delicious morning tea goodies to keep up the energy levels. Refreshments of Tea, Coffee and cool drinks  will be available throughout the week, and appreciation to the committee members who'll help keep things running smoothly.  You'll also be able to purchase tickets  in the Major Raffle to be drawn on Saturday evening - this is to help fund court resurfacing,  which is a particularly  expensive exercise here.

Sunday 21st April sees  the  program begin with a Registration and Social tennis afternoon from 2pm for all players, followed at about 6.30 pm by a formal Welcome and Fish fry where partners and supporters are also able to get into the swing of things.

Play gets under way on Monday morning from 8.30 am  with  the Combined 60's/ 70's  Ladies Doubles  and in the afternoon the 40's/50/s will be on court from 2 pm. Main event, Plate and Consolation matches will be played through to decide finalists for Friday.

Tuesday will follow a similar pattern for the  Mens Doubles - 8.30am  the 60's/70's Division and afternoon matches for the 40's/ 50's,

On Wednesday  the 60's/70's  Mixed Doubles-  the event with most entries-  commences at 8.30 am and Mixed  50's and 40's follow later on. In these events we plan to play through to determine semi-finalists for  play-offs on Friday, and some Plate and Consolation matches will likely be played on Thursday. Since that is ANZAC DAY we normally halt play at 11 am to acknowledge and honour those who ensured our freedom to enjoy the  lifestyle we have here on this beautiful island. We'll miss our usual NZ contingent particularly at that time, as current flight schedules made it too hard for many of our regulars to get here. Again, to all, warmest wishes from Ngaire O'Brien for a successful tournament.

On Thursday morning- ANZAC DAY - very early at 5.15am!-   all are  invited to join the community  at Emily Bay  for a very moving and memorable Dawn Service.  Staff at the Office of the Administrator's  have  also issued an  invitation to  tennis players to share in a Community Breakfast at Government House after the service. Any  Plate and Consolation matches not completed on Wednesday, or carried forward from Monday or Tuesday will be finished on Thursday.

On Friday FINALS  of the seven events will be played throughout the day and they  will be advised over the local radio. Spectators are very welcome to come and watch during the week and you will be amazed- and maybe amused- at the skill and guile that veteran tennis players are noted for!

Then on  Friday  evening from 7 pm the fabled TRI-NATIONS CHALLENGE for the Veterans' Games Shield  will be held. Teams from Australia and Norfolk will battle it out, and the Junior Fund raising Squad will be supplying delicious hot food to sustain everyone. The more the merrier, and  to add to the atmosphere wear the colours and fly the flags.

On Saturday  at a  Presentation Dinner at Governor's Lodge , prizes will be handed  out and short  formalities  will  conclude the week . Tickets at $55 pp are available from Sunday at Registration up until  Wednesday at the Clubhouse. Do come along and be part of one of the big weeks in the Cheryl Calendar.

Pacific East Games in Auckland

We welcomed back the Juniors, Sam Cribb, Croyden Snell, Hannah Wright, Brianna Tavener, Kyran Randall, Tony & Vinnie Martinovich, Alyssa Miller and Mali Garden, last Sunday.  From the few accounts that I have heard, all went well and the children played some great tennis.  There were certainly some happy faces!  Well done Yorlie on your great efforts.

Thanks again to Danny for accompanying the kids and for the training also Thankyou to Melissa who trained the older squad kids and also to Jo Snell for all the work she did behind the scenes, in the day to day organisation, shopping, cooking, washing, taxiing, etc…

A big thank you to Emma Wright for her efforts in the trip organisation.

Sam would like to thank Smudgie and Head for the 2nd Racquet he played with in Auckland.
