I believe the weather put somewhat of a dampener on tennis this week.  Hopefully the weather will be better next week for some social tennis and our coaching clinic being run from Tuesday to Friday by Lauire Geist.

We welcome Laurie back to Norfolk this week for some intensive tennis coaching sessions.  Please be on time for your session throughout the week.  Lessons have been advertised on the Chery Tennis Club Face book page for the last term and we thank all who have taken advantage of this opportunity.  We hope the weather is fine to get out on the court.

Club Membership is due.  All squad children need to be a member of the club and we encourage our night comp players to sign up as it does work out cheaper if you are playing regularly to be a member.  This also allows you to participate in club champs also.

Thursday night Social tennis is the night for you if you want a hit but no commitment.

Court Hire:  Visitors and non-members are welcome to play during the day at a cost of $16 per hour- Night rates are $18 per hour. However, members are able to have free use of the courts during the day, or pay $12 per hour in the evenings when there are no comps being played. Please use the Honesty Box if the courts are unattended.

Ball Machine Hire:   Should you wish to hire the Ball machine to improve your skills, cost to members is $6 per half-hour & $10 per hour; and to Non-members, $15 per half-hour and $25 per hour.  Please be mindful of our neighbours and do not use the ball machine before 7am on Sunday mornings.  Thank you.

Venue Hire:  Looking for a great place to host your next event.  Why not try the Cheryl Tennis club?  Bar facilities available on request and facilities can cater for up to 100 people.

This afternoon sees our Annual Presentation taking place at the Clubhouse from 4.30pm – 6.30pm, we hope to see you there to celebrate the achievements of our members.  We will be having substantial nibbles $15.00 for adults and for children 12 and under, $10.00.  All welcome.

The second round of Mavis Cup took place last week after an inclement start to the day in regards to the weather.  Tennis was definitely the winner on the day.  We do have a few couples who have pulled into the lead.    Next Saturday will be Round 3.  Please organise your own replacement or call Gill ASAP on 56878 if you can’t play.  Remember to bring a potluck salad and your meat for the BBQ and come on down for a great afternoon of social tennis.

Monday night is now in recess for a while with the commencement of Wednesday night tennis.

Tuesday ladies night braved the cold for a hit of tennis and socialising afterwards.

Wednesday Night Mixed Comp continued for Round 2.  Lots of great tennis happening here.

Congratulations to the New Committee for 2018/19.  The executive members have remained the same, Tony Wilkinson - President, Chris Gatehouse - Vice President, Emma Wright -Treasurer and Gill Brown - Secretary.  We have the majority of committee members who have signed on again, Jodie Quintal, Amanda Cribb, Sarah Randall, Kev Randall, Mel Pulsford, Teresa Langusch, Julie South and we welcome Jo Howell to the team.

A fond farewell to two of our long-standing committee members, who have worked tirelessly over many years on behalf of the Cheryl Tennis Club, Rossco and Gae Quintal.  This unfortunately coincided with the loss of Gae’s brother Steve Nobbs, and our thoughts are with the family at this time.

The Gala Day Dinner that was advertised for September 1st has been postponed but keep watching for the new date!

Our Trivia night that was also pencilled in for September 22nd is clashing with wearable art so we will let you know ASAP when this new date will be.

Last weekend saw a great turn out for Mavis Cup.  It was wonderful to see all the courts filled with players and great to see some familiar and not so familiar faces.  Our second round will take place next Saturday 18th August, again from 4.30pm.  There were quite a few who stayed around and had dinner afterwards which completed what had been a great afternoon.

Men’s tennis occurs Monday night and are keen for any new players.  Tuesday Ladies night, saw a few familiar faces and some new recruits.  We welcomed Jess and Susie along and some great tennis was had by all.  Bene has made great improvements in a few sessions of tennis with some tricky shots being played.  Wednesday night is calling for anyone interested in being a part of a mixed comp.  If you are interested, please write your names down at the club or give Amanda a call.  Thursday of course is our social night, so if you are keen for a hit, or a kick, as we also have Soccer running, then come along!

On Monday we farewell Sam Cribb and Danny Nobbs who is accompanying Sam back to Fiji.  We know that Sam will perform to his very best and this huge honour shows how well Sam played while there a few weeks ago.  All the very best Sam and thanks again to Danny for his commitment to our Juniors and taking time out of his family’s life.  Please read below for more details about these events.

The cold nights are starting to draw in and a few of the comps are looking a little smaller than usual.  Although having said that on Tuesday night we did see some new faces at tennis and it was lovely to welcome Tanya Delaney who had a great night and played some awesome shots.  So if you are looking for a great night out ladies where you can give those muscles a stretch as well then come along to our ladies comp night.  Teams will be formed in the next week.  Next Tuesday we are having a potluck following our tennis to farewell Tanya Smith, who unfortunately for us is heading back to Broome, so come along with a plate of food to share.

Junior Report:

Norfolk Island is off to the 2018 Pacific Nations Cup!

Whilst competing in the West Pacific Regional Championships this month in Fiji, Sam Cribb was asked to represent Norfolk Island and take part in the 2018 Pacific Nations Cup.  This event will be held in Lautoka Fiji from the 31st May to 5th June.

This is an International Tennis Federation (I.T.F.) sanctioned and funded tournament for the Pacific region and will be an invaluable opportunity for Sam and other Pacific Island players. The Nations Cup will bring together the best tennis players in the Pacific and will be a prelude to what we will expect in tennis for the Pacific Games in 2019. Other Nations competing in this event include Fiji, American Samoa, Cook Islands, FSM, Kiribati, NMI, Palau, PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuvalu & Vanuatu.

As this is a National team competition, Sam will be teaming up with a player from PNG, Matthew Stubbins.  Matthew lives in Australia but has played Davis Cup for the Pacific. This is a fantastic opportunity for Sam to further develop his tennis and gain insight and knowledge from other high ranked players. The format for this competition will be similar to a Davis Cup event.

Danny Nobbs will be accompanying Sam on this trip as coach/manager.  On behalf of Sam and the Cheryl Tennis Club, we would like to thank Danny for his support and guidance that he will provide to Sam.  Sam would also like to thank Melissa, Danny and Jimmy for their coaching advice and sharing their expertise with him.  We wish Sam all the best in Fiji next week and know he will do Norfolk proud.

From the West Pacific to the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships

In July, Sam will again be returning to Fiji along with Hannah Wright to compete in the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships.  They both qualified for this event by finishing in the top 4 for their age group at the recent West Pacific Regional’s.  This is a huge achievement to have 2 Norfolk Island representatives at this tournament.  They represent and play for the West Pacific and compete against East and North Pacific countries.  The standard of this tournament is extremely high with some of the players already having world rankings in the junior ranks. The top players at this tournament are then invited to go on an Australian tour at the end of the year.

Hannah and Sam will continue their training for the next coming weeks so they can go back to Fiji and be competitive with the best in the Pacific.  Hannah and Sam are great ambassadors for Norfolk and we know they will put in the hard work and do Norfolk proud.

Photos show both Sam and Hannah in finals action in Fiji.

Well it has certainly been a quieter week this week at the tennis club.  There were some farewells on the weekend flowing through to the early week flights and things have started to get back to normal.

The ladies had a great social night on Tuesday with 8 ladies braving the cold and the rain for a hit!  We will try again for Round 7 next Tuesday and have decided to make the final the week after with supper to follow to farewell one of our lovely ladies, Gaby, who is heading off to Australia, after three months here on Norfolk.

We hope to commence Mavis Cup this month.  For those who are new to the island it involves playing with a partner and having one game of doubles and a game of singles.  We usually cook up on the BBQ and bring pot luck salads to share.   The cost is $5.00 per person.  If you are interested in playing a social game of tennis on a Saturday afternoon at 4.30pm then please give Gill a call on 56878 to get involved.  If you are interested and can’t find a partner then let us know and we will do our best to find one!  It is a great comp for those wanting to get back into tennis or for those who enjoy having a hit, so get along for a fun weekend comp!

Mens comp will resume on Monday so get yourself along for 6pm.

We are hearing lots of good things about our Juniors in Fiji at the moment.  I think they have had some of our inclement weather which may have hampered some of the play, but they are keeping in good spirits and enjoying the whole experience and I am sure we will get some more information about the event next week.
