Community Matters - Responding on education

Friday, June 28, 2019

Community Matters

The Australian Government provides regular updates to the community on the development and progress of programs and services for Norfolk Island.

Responding on education

The Australian Government values the contribution and engagement from everyone on Norfolk Island, including teaching staff and the parents and community members, who support the school on a daily basis. Securing a way forward with a new service delivery partner is one of the Australian Government’s highest priorities.

Following on from a series of meetings about education transition on Island last week, the department has been working closely with the NSW Government to provide responses to questions asked by both the NICS P&C and teachers.

In line with the Australian Government’s commitment to keep the community informed about the status of the work we are doing to secure an alternate provider, next week the department will be circulating update #4 of an Education Information series as well as an update for teachers which will address as many of the questions from last week as comprehensively as possible. These updates will be available from the P&C committee, NICS Principal or by contacting us at NI.Education@infrastructure.gov.au

Minister Nola Marino is working hard on behalf of the community to secure a long term education partner for Norfolk Island. This will give students, staff, parents and the school community the certainty it needs going forward. While this work progresses, the Administrator, Eric Hutchinson will keep the Principal and staff informed to ensure the community receives information as it becomes available.

Community Matters - Have your say on proposed changes to local government elections laws

Friday, June 28, 2019

The Australian Government provides regular updates to the community on the development and progress of programs and services for Norfolk Island.

Have your say on proposed changes to local government elections laws

The Australian Government is asking the Norfolk community to have a say on proposed changes to the law dealing with Norfolk Island Regional Council elections.

To get ready for the council election, due to take place in September 2020, there needs to be a number of changes to the law to make sure it is fit for purpose.

The changes will ensure the law applying to NIRC elections is appropriate to the Island context and has a similar effect to the local government laws in NSW.

We are committed to continuing to keep the community informed and engaging with island residents. Anyone can have a say and give feedback on the proposed changes.

A discussion paper is available on the Department’s website that explains the changes, at www.regional.gov.au/territories/norfolk_island/legislation-updates.aspx or in hard copy at the Office of the Administrator.

Some of the topics covered in the paper include treatment of political parties, political donations, lobbying, who may vote and qualifications for holding public office.

Please send your written comments by 5pm Friday 26 July 2019 to NI_Legislation@infrastructure.gov.au or to Norfolk Island and Mainland Territories Branch, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development, GPO Box 594, Canberra ACT 2601.

The department intends to publish all submissions to the discussion paper, unless a request is made for a submission to be kept confidential or a submission contains other information that is not suitable to publish.
