“One of the earliest decisions to be made following the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders on 8th June 1856, concerned the establishment of a school.

Classes began in the New Military Barracks at Kingston on 14th July, 1856, and the attendance of all children was compulsory.

In the following year, Governor Denison published laws and regulations for Norfolk Island, which included compulsory school attendance - the earliest legislation of its kind in the British Empire.
