Pitcairn Descendants (The Association of Norfolk Islanders) was formed in June 1977 by a group of 24 Norfolk Islanders of direct lineage to the original Pitcairn settlers. The group started as "The Committee for Democratic Self Government for Norfolk Island", then changed to "The Society of Descendants of Pitcairn Settlers", then changed in recent times to "The Society of Pitcairn Descendants".

The Society was formed following on from the canvassing of the island for the "Solemn Declarations" of opinion on the Nimmo Report. The 24 men and women, all islanders of Pitcairn descent, who had been instrumental in collecting these Solemn Declarations, formed the nucleus of the Society, and membership was built up by members inviting others whom they knew to be of Pitcairn descent and who share the Society's aims and objectives.
